Haneda vs Narita: Which Tokyo Airport Is Better?

The airport is not the whole decision

Haneda’s location usually makes the trip into central Tokyo shorter. But a convenient airport does not rescue an expensive flight, a bad connection or an arrival time that leaves you waiting for hotel check-in.

Compare the complete journey: airfare, arrival time, luggage, your first hotel and the transport still running when you land.

Pick Haneda when

• The two flights cost roughly the same.
• You are staying in central or southern Tokyo.
• You want the simplest possible arrival after a long flight.

Pick Narita when

• The flight is substantially cheaper or better timed.
• It avoids a connection.
• Your itinerary or accommodation already fits a Narita transfer route.

Late arrivals change the calculation

Do not assume every train or bus runs all night. Check the scheduled arrival against current operator timetables and leave time for immigration, baggage collection and finding the platform.
